Map Info

What It's Like tells the story of an unknown man who does not know who he is or where he is. He does not know anything, in fact. But by the end of this story, he will know one thing; the feeling of a very misunderstood life.

Find your way through three challenges that you have only heard of before, then choose your fate in the fourth and fifth.

Requirements

  • Master Volume: >20%.
  • Music: OFF.
  • Particles: All.
  • Clouds: OFF.
  • Render Distance: 10+ chunks.
  • Mods and resource packs are recommended to be turned off.
  • Must be played on single player.

Important Information

WARNING: Despite its possibly misleading title, What It's Like covers some heavy topics. If you are looking for something else, such as a puzzle map or a mini-game, this is not the right map.

Note: This is NOT a horror map. No jump-scares or creepy-pastas are included.

Tip: If you are having trouble during the first challenge, you can turn on subtitles to make it easier. If you're still having trouble, you can press F3 to bring up the debug screen and the 3D pointer to help you see where you're facing. Note that these two tricks kind of ruin what the challenge is trying to simulate and by some may be considered cheating, but you're free to do it.

Changelog

Update v1.2:

  • Updated the map version to 1.11.2 (as in Minecraft's version).
  • View distance changed from 11+ chunks to 10+ chunks.
  • Added a couple small features and fixed a few bugs.
  • Modified the chat a bit.

+1 nagmk03 This map was very deep, and was awesome. Really awesome.

The subconscious sounded like Sans and Chara from Undertale though, and I couldn't stop thinking about it...

I really don't see (pun intended) how a walkthrough would help you get through the first challenge. The first challenge is quite literally trial and error. There is no secret except for the one that the map explains.
As for why F3 and subtitles, the entire level is based on relying on your hearing rather than your vision. Subtitles make it a lot clearer when you actually take another step, as it displays on the screen when it happens. The default sound of the footsteps in Minecraft is a bit too subtle sometimes. As for F3, the 3D cursor simply helps you know if you're facing the right direction, and not looking straight up/down or walking diagonally. That's what it's all about.
If you are having trouble during the first level even after you enabled subtitles and the debug screen, I'm really sorry but I cannot help you. All you can do is keep searching. Trust me, it's really short. Just keep searching until you find the exit.

Thanks a lot for clarifying everything!

Remove the resource pack. You'll see it easier. (This is considered cheating, of course...)

Well, it seems like this thread has been sort of inactive.
Maybe you could provide a walkthrough of the map? Or at least a set of instructions to follow in times of desperation?
Reading the comments below and the pictures made me extremely intrigued at what this map has to offer, but frankly, at least give a place where I can go to if I can't solve the map. I know that this map is trying to simulate some very deep stuff, but please...

Leave a walkthrough.

P.S. "If you are having trouble during the first challenge, you can turn on subtitles to make it easier. If you're still having trouble, you can press F3 to bring up the debug screen and the 3D pointer to help you see where you're facing."
F3? For what? Subtitles? Why?
I just don't understand.

+2 Nadia Well I played it and honestly it was so deep. I originally chose the choice to fight the subconscious and when I finished I was thinking if that was the best option so when I decided to try the other ending it was like wait a sec was this the best decision though? It was very interesting to play but also very enjoyable since I never seem to play maps like this one. This map was truly 1 of a kind and even though it is a little sad I don't regret playing through it and it was overall a very interesting experience and map to play through.

I have trouble turning my Minecraft texture pack back to normal. I played the map once and now the pack won't go away and it's making let's plays difficult. Please, what do I need to do?

I'm not sure. The pack is embedded onto the map, it should only be activated if you're in that map. Try maybe checking your resource pack file and see if there's that resource pack there or maybe uninstall the map?

+1 Billybo10K This was a very enjoyable map to play through. It deals with some pretty heavy themes that I can see, just from the comments, takes a certain element of maturity to fully comprehend. It was very thought-provoki ng and you did a great job.

From a technical standpoint, very good, but from a gameplay standpoint it was slightly lacking in two areas. The very beginning, where you have to wander with blindness, felt like it went on for just a little bit too long. I unfortunately had to F3 to navigate. The other issue came from the third ending. It's tedious and unneeded. It's basically the same ending as if you had stayed but takes a good while to achieve due to the random nature of the final corridor.

I did love the Death ending though. It was very fulfilling.

I did a video of my run through the map, so I hope you enjoy it - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Bsl5n_ctLc

4/5 Stars.

0 ZiniuxPlayZ This is a very interesting map. Everything is relatable for me because my cousin is both deaf and someone blind, so it is very hard for him to get around, especially at night. I also had a friend who was a mute when I was a young child, so I can understand how tough it must be for people with blindness, deafness and muteness to go through this every day. However, the only one I can't relate to is depression. I have never experienced depression, but playing through this map gave me an insider on what it's like to have depression. Overall, 10/10!
