Minecraft Java Edition contains 34 registered structures across all three dimensions. From villages and desert pyramids on the surface to ancient cities buried at Y -27 and trial chambers hidden between Y -40 and Y -20, each structure has specific biome requirements and generation rules.
The Minecraft structure explorer above displays every structure in the game with its type, biome requirements, and mob spawn overrides. Structures like Nether Fortresses override normal mob spawning within their bounding boxes, for example
Blazes (weight 10),
Wither Skeletons (weight 8), and Zombified Piglins (weight 5) replace the regular Nether spawn table inside fortress bounds.
Click any structure to view its complete data, and use the generated
/locate command to find it in your world.
Minecraft uses several structure generation systems. Jigsaw structures (villages, bastions, pillager outposts, ancient cities, trail ruins, trial chambers) are assembled from modular template pools, allowing for randomized layouts. The size parameter controls how many jigsaw iterations are performed. Trial Chambers use size 20, making them the largest jigsaw structure in the game. Ancient Cities use size 7.
Fixed structures like Desert Pyramids, Jungle Temples, and Igloos use a single predefined template. They always generate the same way, with minor loot variation.
Terrain adaptation determines how structures interact with the landscape. Ancient Cities use "beard_box" to carve space around them, Trail Ruins use "bury" to embed in terrain, and Trial Chambers use "encapsulate" to generate fully enclosed underground.
Wither skeleton farming:
Nether Fortresses override monster spawns within their bounding box. Wither Skeletons have a spawn weight of 8 inside fortresses, making them one of the more common spawns. Light up or slab off non-fortress areas nearby to concentrate spawns inside the structure.
Guardian farming: Ocean Monuments override all spawns in their full bounding box. Only Guardians (weight 1) spawn as monsters. The monument suppresses axolotl and underground water creature spawns entirely, which is why guardian farms need to control the space precisely.
Ancient City loot:
Ancient Cities generate at Y -27 in Deep Dark biomes. They suppress all mob spawns in their bounding box, no natural spawns at all. The only threat is the Warden, summoned by sculk shriekers, not by the spawn table.
Trial Chambers:
The newest dungeon type generates between Y -40 and Y -20. With a jigsaw size of 20, these are massive structures with randomized room layouts, trial spawners, and vault blocks containing exclusive loot.
34 registered structures, including variants. Villages alone account for 5 variants (plains, desert, savanna, snowy, taiga), and ruined portals have 7 variants for different biome types.
Use /locate structure minecraft:structure_id with cheats enabled. You can also use tags like #minecraft:village to find any variant of a structure type.
Woodland Mansions are among the rarest, often generating thousands of blocks from spawn. They only appear in Dark Forest biomes. Strongholds are limited to 128 per world, arranged in rings around the origin.
Four structures generate in the Nether: Nether Fortresses, Bastion Remnants (all biomes except Basalt Deltas), Ruined Portals (Nether variant), and Nether Fossils (Soul Sand Valley, between Y 32 and near the ceiling).
