Check a name of your own

Free means no Java account holds that name right now. A name released by a rename stays reserved for 37 days, so a freshly dropped name reads as free here before it can be claimed.

Picking a name that lasts

A good username is one you can say out loud and type without thinking. Two words and no digits reads best; a number on the end is what you settle for when the two words are gone, which for most short pairs they are. The live check saves you finding that out in the launcher.

World names only matter to you, so pick for the feeling: the generator leans on places and weather for those. Server names are a brand and they live on server lists at small sizes, which is why the short, one-word forms (EmberCraft, SculkWorks) tend to win over anything with three words. Pet names are for a name tag, and a name tag is a reason to keep a mob around, so they skew short and friendly.

Changing your Java username

Sign in on minecraft.net, open your profile and use Change name. One change every 30 days, and your old name is held for 37 days before it becomes available to anyone else, which is also why a name that looks free here can refuse to take: someone dropped it less than 37 days ago. Your skin, capes and stats stay with the account, since friends and servers track you by UUID, not by name.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the rules for a Minecraft username?

3 to 16 characters, using only letters, digits and underscore. No spaces, no other symbols, and it cannot already belong to another Java Edition account. Case does not make a name unique: Steve and steve are the same name.

How does this check if a username is taken?

Each generated username is looked up through Mojang's profile service, the same lookup the game uses to find a player's UUID. If a profile comes back the name is taken; if nothing comes back it is free. The check runs for the names on screen and for anything you type into the box at the bottom.

A name shows as free but I can't change to it. Why?

When a player changes their name, the old one is held for 37 days before anyone else can claim it, and the lookup reports nothing for it during that time. Try again after the hold ends. Names are also limited to one change every 30 days per account.

Can I use these names for a Bedrock gamertag?

Bedrock uses your Xbox gamertag, which has its own rules (up to 12 characters, spaces allowed, a number suffix if the name is taken), so the availability check here does not apply. The ideas themselves still work; keep the ones under 12 characters.

How do I name a pet in Minecraft?

Rename a name tag on an anvil, then use it on the mob. It costs 1 level. A named mob never despawns, and a few names do extra things: a sheep named jeb_ cycles through every wool colour and a vindicator named Johnny attacks every other mob.
