How the roll works

A librarian gets 2 of its 3 level 1 listings, so the book trade shows up 66.7% of the time. The book is a uniform pick from the tradeable enchantments a villager may sell, then a uniform level from 1 to that enchantment's max. Treasure books (Mending, Frost Walker and the curses) cost double. The offer is rolled the moment the villager takes the lectern, and it is locked once you trade with it, so trade once to keep a good one and re-place the lectern to reroll a bad one.

Level thresholds are 10, 70, 150, 250 XP for Apprentice, Journeyman, Expert, Master. Every trade gives the villager the XP on its listing, so the hall table below counts how many trades it takes to unlock a higher level offer.

A villager restocks only while it can reach its job block, up to twice a day, the second time at least 120 seconds after the first. Prices here ignore demand: a trade bought out repeatedly climbs in price until it is left alone for a restock or two.

What decides a librarian's book

Everything about the book is rolled when the villager takes the lectern. Whether the book trade is there at all, which enchantment it is, what level, and what it costs: four independent rolls, and the planner shows each one so the expected number of lecterns is not a guess.

The listing pool at level 1 is paper, bookshelves and the book, and the villager keeps two of the three. The book's enchantment is a flat pick among every enchantment villagers are allowed to sell, which in the current data is 40 of the 43 in the game (Soul Speed, Swift Sneak and Wind Burst are not sold), and the level is a flat pick from 1 to the enchantment's maximum. That last roll is why top-level books are the slow ones: a Protection IV book is a quarter as likely as a Protection book of some level.

The price is 2 plus a random 0 to 4 + 10 per level, plus 3 per level, and books with a treasure enchantment pay double. The random part can push a high level book past 64, where the stack size clamps it. One cure takes 25 off any book, because the book trade carries a 0.2 price multiplier where most trades have 0.05, and the floor is 1 emerald.

Stock, restocks and a day of trading

A trade has a use count, 12 for most and 16 for the farm-style sales, and a villager restores every trade to full when it restocks. It does that at its job block, at most twice a day with a two minute gap, so the ceiling for any one listing is three times its uses a day. The hall table multiplies that by the number of villagers you give each row and prices the lot at base cost or the cured cost, which is how it arrives at emeralds in and out for a day. The job block count is what you place, one per villager, and every villager also needs a bed it can actually lie in or it will not pick a job or restock.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the odds of getting a Mending villager?

About 1 in 60 per fresh librarian. The book trade is one of three level 1 listings and a villager takes two of them, so it shows 2 times in 3; the book is then a uniform pick among the 40 enchantments villagers can sell, and Mending has one level. Two thirds of 1 in 40 is 1 in 60, so expect to place a lectern around 60 times. Enchantments with more levels are rarer at a given level: Sharpness V is 1 in 300 because the level is also rolled.

How much does a Mending book cost from a villager?

10 to 38 emeralds plus a book. The price is 2 + a random number from 0 to 14 + 3, which is 5 to 19, doubled because Mending is a treasure enchantment. After one cure the book trade's 0.2 price multiplier takes 25 off, so the same book costs 1 to 13 emeralds. Non-treasure books are not doubled: a level 1 book is 5 to 19, a level 5 book 17 to 64.

How do you reroll a librarian's trades?

Break the lectern and place it again. A villager with no job claims a free job block and rolls its level 1 offers at that moment, and the offers only lock once you have traded with it. So keep breaking and replacing the lectern until the book is right, then trade once. A villager that has already traded keeps its trades even if it loses the lectern.

How often do villagers restock?

Up to twice a day, and only while they are at their job block. The second restock has to be at least 2400 ticks (2 minutes) after the first, and the count resets with the new day. Each restock sets every trade back to zero uses, so a 12-use trade can be bought 36 times a day. A villager that cannot reach its job block never restocks, which is why locking villagers away from their lectern stops the hall.

How many trades does it take to level up a villager?

Villagers level at 10, 70, 150 and 250 XP, and each trade gives the XP on its listing, between 1 and 30. The planner takes the best listing at each level, so reaching Master from a fresh librarian is about 5 + 6 + 4 + 4 trades if it has the best offer at each level; buying the cheap 1 XP trades instead takes far longer.

Why did the price go up after I traded a lot?

Demand. Every restock adds the uses minus the unused stock to a demand counter, and the price grows by floor(base price times demand times the trade's multiplier). Buying a trade out repeatedly pushes it up; leaving it alone for a restock lets demand fall again. The planner shows base and cured prices and ignores demand on purpose.
