Minecraft Java Edition contains 51 paintings spanning sizes from 1x1 to 4x4 blocks. Most original paintings are pixel-art interpretations by Swedish artist Kristoffer Zetterstrand, while newer additions come from artists like Sarah Boeving and others commissioned by Mojang.
The Minecraft painting gallery above displays every
painting in the game with its title, dimensions and a preview. Filter by size to find paintings that fit a specific wall space, or browse the full collection. Each entry includes a /summon command for placing that exact painting in your world.
Paintings in Minecraft are more than decoration. They can hide secret passages, cover
redstone wiring and serve as walkthrough entrances when placed over a sign-supported opening.
1. Browse every painting to see its artwork, title and dimensions at a glance.
2. Filter by size to find paintings that match a specific wall opening. A 2x2 filter shows only paintings that need a 2-wide, 2-tall space.
3. Copy the /summon command to place a specific painting without the randomness of the standard placement system.
4. Check painting IDs for use in data packs, commands or resource pack customization.
Paintings come in multiple sizes. When you place a painting on a wall, the game picks a random painting that fits the available space. If you want a specific painting, size your wall opening to match exactly. Here is the breakdown by size category:
| Size (W x H) | Count | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| 1x1 | 8 | Kebab, Aztec, Alban, Bomb, Plant, Wasteland, Meditative |
| 2x1 | 6 | Courbet, Sea, Sunset, Creebet, Pool |
| 1x2 | 3 | Graham, Wanderer, Prairie Ride |
| 2x2 | 12 | Match, Bust, Stage, Void, Skull and Roses, Wither |
| 4x2 | 5 | Fighters, Changing, Finding, Lowmist, Passage |
| 3x3 | 8 | Bouquet, Cavebird, Cotan, Sunflowers, Tides, Endboss |
| 4x3 / 3x4 | 4 | Skeleton, Donkey Kong, Backyard, Pond |
| 4x4 | 5 | Burning Skull, Pigscene, Pointer, Orb, Unpacked |
Secret doors: Place
signs on the sides of a 1-wide opening, then hang a painting over it. Players can walk through the painting because it has no collision box. This classic trick works for hidden rooms and bases.
Controlling which painting appears: Paintings are randomly selected based on the available wall space. To force a specific painting, build a wall opening that matches only that painting's dimensions. For guaranteed results, use the /summon command with the painting's variant ID.
Decoration variety: The 2x2 size category has 12 paintings, the most of any size. If you want variety in a
gallery hall, 2x2 openings give you the best odds of getting different paintings each time you place one.
Resource packs: Each painting has an asset_id that maps to a texture file. Resource pack creators can replace any painting's texture by overriding the corresponding file in assets/minecraft/textures/painting/.
Minecraft Java Edition has 51 paintings, ranging from 1x1 to 4x4 blocks. The collection has grown over the years, with the most recent additions arriving in the 1.21 update.
When you place a painting, the game randomly selects one that fits the available wall space. To force a specific painting, build a wall opening that matches only that painting's dimensions, then place and break the painting until the one you want appears. For guaranteed results, use the /summon command with the painting's variant ID from this tool.
Most original paintings are by Kristoffer Zetterstrand, a Swedish artist. His works are pixel-art versions of classical paintings and video game scenes. Newer paintings from 1.21 onward were created by other artists commissioned by Mojang.
The largest size is 4x4 blocks (64x64 pixels). Five paintings use this size: Burning Skull, Pigscene, Pointer, Orb and Unpacked. Placing one requires a wall that is at least 4 blocks wide and 4 blocks tall with no obstructions.
