/give @p minecraft:potion[potion_contents={potion:"minecraft:night_vision"}]Leave empty to use the default potion color. Custom color overrides the potion's natural color.
Generate /give commands for every potion type: regular, splash, lingering, and tipped arrows. Choose any status effect, add an optional custom color, and create potions that cannot be brewed in survival.
Minecraft's brewing system only covers a fraction of the 40 available status effects. Effects like Haste, Blindness, Nausea, and Saturation cannot be brewed at all. The potion generator gives you every effect, on any potion type, including tipped arrows.
The modern command format uses the potion_contents component, which replaced the old Potion NBT tag in Minecraft 1.20.5. This tool builds that syntax for you so the brackets always match.
1. Pick the item type. Choose a regular potion to drink, a splash potion to throw, a lingering potion for an area cloud, or a tipped arrow.
2. Choose the potion effect. Pick from the full list grouped by category, including the long and strong variants.
3. Set a custom color. Optional. Override the natural potion color with any hex value.
4. Set the target and count. Send the item to a selector or a named player and choose how many to give.
5. Copy the command. The output updates live, so copy and paste it into your game or a command block.
The same potion effect behaves differently depending on which item it is applied to. Here is what each item type does:
| Item | Behavior |
|---|---|
| potion | Drinkable potion, applies its effect to whoever drinks it |
| splash_potion | Thrown potion that applies the effect on impact |
| lingering_potion | Thrown potion that leaves a cloud for 30 seconds |
| tipped_arrow | Arrow that applies the potion effect on hit |
Tipped arrows are the most useful for commands: you can attach effects like Haste or Resistance that are impossible to brew, giving you ranged support that survival cannot match.

There are 40 status effects in Minecraft Java Edition. Only about half can be brewed in survival. The rest, like Haste, Blindness, Resistance, and Saturation, require commands, beacons, or mob attacks. With /give commands any of the 40 effects can be applied to potions.
Splash potions apply their effect instantly to entities in the splash radius when thrown. Lingering potions create a cloud that persists for 30 seconds, repeatedly applying the effect to anyone who walks through it. Lingering potions are crafted by combining a splash potion with dragon's breath.
Surround a lingering potion with 8 arrows in a crafting grid to produce 8 tipped arrows. You can also dip arrows in a cauldron containing a potion. With commands, you can create tipped arrows with any effect using the potion_contents component on tipped_arrow items.
Minecraft 1.20.5 replaced the old Potion NBT tag with the potion_contents component. The generator builds commands like /give @s potion[potion_contents={potion:"minecraft:night_vision"}], which is the format used in current Java Edition versions.
