The Yellow Text Under the Minecraft Logo

Splash texts are the short yellow lines that flash next to the Minecraft logo on the title screen, picked at random every time the game opens. There are 454 of them in the current Java Edition, and this archive lists every one with a search box, a random roller and notes on the ones that reference other games, the game's history and the developers.

The line of bouncing yellow text on the main menu has been part of Minecraft since the very early days. Each one is stored as plain text in a resource called splashes.txt, and the game chooses a single line at random whenever the title screen loads. That is why you almost never see the same one twice in a row. They are pure flavour: jokes, slogans, in-references and the occasional heartfelt note from the team, with no effect on the game itself.

A few splashes are not random. The game shows Happy birthday! on your computer's birthday, swaps in seasonal lines on holidays, and greets you with your username on others. Everything else is drawn from the main pool, which has grown and shrunk across versions as developers add new jokes and retire old ones. The list here is taken straight from the game's own data, so the numbering matches the order in the file.

Many of the most recognisable lines are references. That's no moon! is Obi-Wan in Star Wars, Reticulating splines! is borrowed from the Sims games, and DRR! DRR! DRR! comes from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Others are about Minecraft itself: More than 500 sold! is an old joke from when sales really were that small, and Made in Sweden! simply states where Mojang is based. Use the search box to find a phrase, or hit Random splash to land on a surprise.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the splash text in Minecraft?

The splash text is the single line of yellow text that appears at an angle next to the Minecraft logo on the title screen, bobbing up and down as if pulsing. One line is picked at random each time you open the game. They are short jokes, references and slogans rather than anything that affects gameplay.

How many splash texts are there in Minecraft?

There are 454 splash texts in the current version of Java Edition. The full set lives in a file called splashes.txt inside the game's resources, and new ones are added from time to time while a few are removed, so the exact count changes between versions. This page lists every one in the version it was built from.

Why does the splash text change every time I open Minecraft?

The game picks one line at random from the splashes list each time the title screen loads, so reopening the game or returning to the menu usually shows a different one. A handful of special splashes are not random: greetings tied to your username, holiday lines on certain dates, and the rare Happy birthday! line that appears on your computer's birthday.

Can I change or add my own splash text?

Yes, in Java Edition. The splashes are stored as plain text in the game's resources, so a resource pack can override the splashes.txt file with your own lines. You can also edit them directly inside the jar, though a resource pack is cleaner because it does not touch the game files. Bedrock Edition does not support this.

What do the famous Minecraft splash texts mean?

Many reference other things. That's no moon! is a Star Wars line, Reticulating splines! comes from the Sims games, Falling with style! is from Toy Story, and DRR! DRR! DRR! is from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Others point at the game's own history, like Indev! and More than 500 sold!, or credit the developers, like Made in Sweden! and Music by C418!. The annotations on this page explain the recognisable ones.
